The Ave Maria University women's golf team continued to rewrite the school record books, as the Gyrenes posted a school record tournament for the second week in a row. After posting a 54-hole score of 1046 at the Nancy Nichols Fall Invitational, Ave Maria lowered that record by nine strokes with a 1037 at the Southeastern University Fall Invitational, played at the Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland.
The Gyrenes started play with a 342 in the opening round, a score that was led by the efforts of senior Eliana Tetzlaff. The Wisconsin native was the second Gyrene this season to post a round in the 70s, shooting a personal best 79 in a round that included birdies on the eighth and 12th holes. Gracie Milam and Victoria Stephens added scores of 84 and 89, respectively, while Grace Wiggins rounded out AMU's team score with a personal best 90.
Alexandra Quinonez was the standout for the Gyrenes in the second round, as the sophomore posted the best round of her AMU career. Quinonez played clean golf in the middle of her round, making five pars in a six hole span to card an 85. Milam also carded an 85 to lead AMU's team score, which was rounded out by Tetzlaff (91) and Stephens (93).
Ave Maria's best round of the week came on Tuesday in the final round. Despite only one golfer shooting their best round, the Gyrenes shot a 341 to finish up the week. Tetzlaff returned to the top of the leaderboard among AMU golfers, shooting an 83. Victoria Stephens was the lone Gyrene to card her best round of the week in the final round with an 85. AMU's team score in the final round was completed by an 86 from Quinonez and an 87 from Milam.
As Ave Maria's leading scorer in two of three rounds, Tetzlaff was the top Gyrene finisher with a score of 253. Milam followed three strokes behind with a 256, and Quinonez was third, carding a total score of 264. Stephens, who is the only other AMU golfer with a round in the 70s this season, carded an 267, and Wiggins rounded out the effort at 280.
Southeastern ran away with the team title on their home course, taking the top spot by 35 strokes over runner-up Keiser. Three of the tournament's top four golfers came from the Fire, including individual medalist Marlie Smit. Smit was at par or better in the final two rounds, taking the top spot by three strokes over SEU teammate Madeyln Campbell.
This week's Invitational in Lakeland marks the end of Ave Maria's fall season. The championship spring season is scheduled to begin Monday, February 13, when the Gyrenes take the course at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational. AMU is currently scheduled to play in four tournaments, culminating in The Sun Conference Championships, held at a site to be announced at the end of the spring season.
