The Ave Maria University men's golf team once again proved they can compete among some of the best teams in the nation, placing sixth at the Southeastern University Fall Invitational, played at the Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland. The Gyrenes set a school record with their 289 in the second round, and shot the first 54-hole tournament of less than 900 strokes in school history, playing the event in 899 strokes.
The Gyrenes were in fourth place after the first round, shooting a 298 that saw the team's number four scorer shoot a 76. AJ Cherubini led the way for AMU in the opening round, carding three birdies on the final six holes and four birdies total to shoot 73. Ty Kaufman made four birdies of his own to shoot 74, while Eric Cherubini (75) and Gabriel DeCasas (76) rounded out Ave Maria's team score.
After his first round 76, DeCasas bounced back with a brilliant second round. After bogeying his first two holes, DeCasas played five under par golf in the final 16 holes, finishing the day with a three-under 69. Kaufman was also under par, starting his round with an eagle and finishing with a two under par 70. Scores of 74 and 76 from AJ and Eric Cherubini rounded out the best round in AMU history, a one over par 289 that was only one shot away from being the best round in the field.
In fourth place after the second round, the Gyrenes concluded the tournament with a 312 in the final round. Kaufman carded a 76 to lead the Gyrenes on Tuesday, and DeCasas and AJ Cherubini followed with scores of 77. Eric Cherubini and Eric Hyman both recorded scores of 82 to complete AMU's team score of 899, the best in school history.
Kaufman ended the tournament as the top Gyrene, tying for 12th place with a score of 220. DeCasas (222) and AJ Cherubini (224) both placed in the top 20, while Eric Cherubini added a 233. Hyman placed fifth among Gyrenes with a 54-hole score of 241, but was the best player in the tournament on par three holes, shooting two-under par. Pierre Westhoff played unattached, and completed the tournament with a score of 245.
Keiser was the team champion in Lakeland, shooting four under par as a team and winning by 14 strokes over host Southeastern. Four of Keiser's five competing golfers placed in the top four, led by individual medalist Wilhelm Ahlgren. Ahlgran carded rounds of 70, 72, and 71 to topple teammate Jakob Stavang Stubhaug by two strokes and St. Thomas' Kade Cannon by three.
This week's Invitational in Lakeland marks the end of Ave Maria's fall season. The championship spring season is scheduled to begin Monday, February 13, when the Gyrenes take the course at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational. AMU is currently scheduled to play in four tournaments, culminating in The Sun Conference Championships, held at a site to be announced at the end of the spring season.
