City of Naples issued the following announcement.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) along with the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the City of Naples with Tree Cities of the World designation. The international program celebrates cities across all continents that meet core standards for the care and planning of urban trees and forests. The Tree Cities of the World program is built off the success of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program, which the City of Naples has been part of for 23 years. The vision of the Tree Cities of the World program is to connect cities around the world in a new network dedicated to sharing and adopting the most successful approaches to managing city trees and forests.
The inaugural class is represented by 59 cities in 17 countries. There are 23 US cities - 5 in the state of Florida. To achieve recognition, the City of Naples met the five core standards: establish responsibility, set the rules, know what you have, allocate the resources, and celebrate achievements. The City of Naples is joined by cities like Paris, Toronto, Madrid, New York, and Atlanta in receiving this prestigious status.
“It is an honor for our City of Naples to receive this prestigious world recognition. We love our trees!” said Mayor Bill Barnett. This is a great accomplishment for the City of Naples and staff is grateful for all the support City Council, as well as our residents, have provided to plant and maintain Naples tree canopy which currently consists of over 20,100 trees.
Trees provide multiple benefits to a city when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants, and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits. “This designation signifies the City of Naples’s commitment to being a healthier, happier city,” said Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation.
