Over the past two weeks, Congressman Byron Donalds and his office have been actively engaging with the Southwest Florida community during the Congressional recess. Efforts included town hall meetings, site visits, and collaborations with state and federal agencies to address local concerns.
A significant issue addressed was the Ethylene Oxide (EtO) discharges at the LeeSar/American Contract Systems (ACS) plant in Fort Myers. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) raised concerns about potential public health risks. Congressman Donalds stated, "Following these productive conversations, the consensus is that there is no public hazard for citizens in the discharge zone." He also noted that ACS has implemented a voluntary discharge control system significantly reducing EtO emissions.
In addition to environmental issues, Donalds hosted a town hall in Fort Myers alongside State Senator Jonathan Martin. The event allowed community members to voice their concerns on various topics including hurricane tax relief and nuclear energy policy. Donalds emphasized transparency, stating, "Transparency in government is critical and I’m grateful for each opportunity in which I’m able hear directly from the members of our Southwest Florida community."
The aftermath of Hurricane Ian remains a priority as recovery efforts continue in Fort Myers Beach. Invited by Mayor Dan Allers, Donalds toured the island's recovery progress. Despite ongoing challenges, he expressed pride in standing with the community.
Donalds also addressed harmful algal blooms affecting Cape Coral waterways. He introduced a three-bill Water Quality Legislative Package aimed at combating these outbreaks.
On national matters, Donalds reacted to a Supreme Court decision blocking President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. He remarked, “Today’s SCOTUS ruling is a pivotal reminder of our system of Checks and Balances that President Biden was attempting to trample on with his unconstitutional plan.”
As Congress reconvenes, Donalds pledges continued advocacy for advanced nuclear technology and legislation benefiting Southwest Florida.
