Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 (NDAA), which includes seven amendments proposed by Congressman Byron Donalds. The bill aims to fund military operations and eliminate certain policies while enhancing fiscal accountability. Donalds emphasized the significance of his amendments, particularly in relation to nuclear energy and national security.

"NDAA rarely includes provisions on nuclear energy, but times are changing," said Donalds. He introduced several amendments related to advanced nuclear technology, including support for Project Pele—a Department of Defense initiative focused on developing a portable nuclear microreactor.

Donalds also led a bipartisan letter with thirteen colleagues expressing strong support for Project Pele. "Project Pele is an innovative solution that is critical for maintaining and bolstering America’s national security," he stated.

In addition to legislative efforts, Donalds participated in congressional hearings addressing oversight of the Department of Defense (DOD) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policy. He criticized ESG funds as costly with inadequate returns and expressed concerns over defense spending priorities.

On environmental matters, Donalds provided updates regarding the American Contract Systems Facility in Fort Myers. According to a memorandum from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), new emissions controls have been installed at the facility to significantly reduce ethylene oxide levels.

The DEP has conducted inspections and anticipates further EPA rulemaking efforts that will impact facilities across the U.S., including ACS – Fort Myers. "DEP is committed to protecting Florida’s air quality," stated a DEP representative.

Donalds continues his engagement with various stakeholders on Capitol Hill, meeting with representatives from different communities and participating in local events such as ceremonies at the National Flight Academy.
