Six Gyrenes Named All-Sun Conference

The Ave Maria University volleyball team placed six players on the All-Sun Conference teams, announced Friday afternoon by the league. Five Gyrenes - Cabriella Bouterse, Abigail Costlow, Madelyn Haut, Victoria Schein, and Lily Witkoski - were named First Team All-Sun Conference, setting a program record, while a sixth, Katie Grose, earned Second Team accolades.

Cabriella Bouterse earned First Team All-Conference honors for the third year in a row, marking each of her three years at Ave Maria. Bouterse continued to be one of the most feared hitters in the conference, recording 265 kills with an attack percentage of .320, totals that both ranked in the SUN's top five. The senior also added 44 blocks to help AMU's defensive efforts.

Abigail Costlow remained one of the best middle blockers in The Sun Conference, and was named First Team All-Conference for the second straight year. Costlow led all Sun Conference players with 1.08 blocks per set, and the sophomore is in striking distance of Ave Maria's single season record for blocks while also adding 196 kills with a .359 attack percentage.

Madelyn Haut becomes the first player in program history to be a First Team All-Conference selection in four consecutive seasons. Haut led the Sun Conference with a hitting percentage of .338, and now holds Ave Maria's career records in blocks and kills after posting 79 total blocks and 227 kills during the 2022 season.

Victoria Schein returns to the First Team in 2022, following Second Team honors in 2021 and First Team recognition in 2020. Schein played the libero position in almost every set for the Gyrenes this season, and became the first player in program history with 1500 career digs. She enters Friday's conference semifinal with 415 digs this season.

Lily Witkoski was named to the First Team for the third year in a row. The New York native was Ave Maria's leading setter during the 2022 season, racking up 622 assists, a total that has her on the doorstep of the Ave Maria career record, as well as 2000 career assists. She also chipped in with 213 digs, 81 kills, and 54 total blocks.

Katie Grose, who was named First Team All-Conference following her freshman year of 2019, concluded her AMU career with Second Team honors in 2022. Grose did a little of everything for the Gyrenes, both as a setter and a hitter. The senior currently has 255 assists, 120 digs, 70 kills, and 41 total blocks on the season.

With the regular season concluded, the Gyrenes turn their attention to defending their Sun Conference Tournament title. Ave Maria will enter the tournament as the number two seed for the third year in a row. In the semifinals, AMU will face third-seeded Keiser at 5 p.m. on the campus of St. Thomas University. AMU split a pair of five-setters with Keiser this season, with each team winning on the other's home floor. No.1 St. Thomas and No. 4 Southeastern play in the other semifinal at 2 p.m.
