The new MS Fishing Club had its first outing last weekend, fishing off the dock at the Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church.
The location was graciously offered to the club by Reverend Edward Gleason, father of Claire ’29, Howard ’25, and Nora Gleason ’26. Fifteen students with different levels of experience fished the morning away, and quite the collection of fish were caught and released. Students were reeling in mangrove snapper, ladyfish, crevalle jack, and surprisingly some Mayan cichlids, which are generally a freshwater species and seemed to have been displaced in the saltwater due to Hurricane Ian. Duke Shotwell ’28 and his father brought in a gracious donation of live bait shrimp from Serenity Bait Company for the event, and Bennett Talford ’27 and his dad brought donuts for the crew. Many thanks to Mr. Morales, father of Anakin ’29, and Reverend Gleason for helping the students with baiting hooks and fixing lines. A special appearance was made by Mr. Jongerden’s dog Loki who was ensuring the students had tight lines and set hooks. The Fishing Club meets Friday during 1st MS lunch, and is currently planning their next outing for November.
