The Ave Maria University women's golf team had a historic showing at the Nancy Nichols Fall Invitational, setting 18 and 54-hole program records Monday and Tuesday at the Sun 'N Lake Golf Club in Sebring. The Gyrenes, who placed fourth in a five-team field featuring three other Sun Conference programs, broke the school record for a 54-hole tournament by eight strokes with a 1046, and set a new single-round record with their 335 in the final round.
Eliana Tetzlaff led the way for the Gyrenes in the first round on Monday, shooting an 83 to lead the Gyrenes to a team score of 346. Both Gracie Milam and Victoria Stephens also broke 90, shooting 86 and 87, respectively. Playing their second round of the day, Ave Maria then posted a 365 in the later round on Monday. Stephens was the AMU leader in the second round, carding an 88.
Four of Ave Maria's five competing golfers posted their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, leading to the school record 335 in the final round. Stephens became the first Gyrene to break 80 this season, carding a 79 that included a birdie on the 18th hole and an even par score on the back nine. Tetzlaff and Milam both shot 84, while Alexandra Quinonez posted her best round of the tournament with an 87 to round out AMU's team score of 335.
With the top score in each of the final two rounds, Stephens was AMU's top scorer in her debut, shooting a 254. Tetzlaff also earned a top 20 finish, carding a 259 over 54 holes. Milam was third among Ave Maria golfers with a 262, and Quinonez carded a 271 for tournament. Ave Maria's efforts were rounded out by Grace Wiggins, who contributed to the team score in the second round and finished with a 276.
Southeastern University pulled away in the final round to claim the team title in Sebring, shooting a 295 on Tuesday to earn a 14-stroke victory over runner-up Eastern Florida State. The individual champion came from St. Thomas University, as Serah Khanyereri toppled SEU's Hallie Riley and Abigail McNeil by one stroke, shooting a 226 to pick up medalist honors.
The end of the 2022 fall season comes next week, when the Gyrenes tee off at the Southeastern University Fall Invitational. The last of AMU's three fall tournaments will take place at the Grasslands Golf & Country Club in Lakeland, and will again feature several nationally ranked opponents. The teams will tee off on Monday, with the tournament scheduled to conclude the following day.
