Women's Golf Sets 36-Hole Record in Georgia

The Ave Maria University women's golf started their 2022-23 season on a positive note this week, as the Gyrenes teed off at the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational. The Gyrenes posted team scores of 344 and 345 at Jekyll Island Golf Club, posting a 36-hole total of 689. That score is the lowest 36-hole score for an AMU women's golf team in program history, besting the mark set at the Georgetown College Invitational during the 2016-17 season.

Ave Maria's top finisher in the Peach State was Eliana Tetzlaff. The senior started her third season at AMU with back-to-back rounds of 81, earning a finish in the top half of the field. The Wisconsin native played better on the back nine in both rounds of the 36 hole tournament, including a 38 on holes 10 through 18 on Tuesday. Tetzlaff birdied the par five 15th hole on Monday, then made birdie on the 12th hole in the final round.

Morgan Hicks was also in the 80s in both days of the tournament, shooting an 85 in the first round and an 86 in the final round. Hicks also logged two birdies on the week, doing so on the same holes (albeit in reverse order) to Tetzlaff. Third among Gyrene finishers was Gracie Milam, who posted a 175 in her Ave Maria debut. Milam was AMU's second best player in the first round, thanks to an 83. She finished her first collegiate tournament with a 92 in the final round.

Andrea Quinonez also posted a round in the 80s on the week, tying for the Gyrenes' second best score in the final round with an 86. Grace Wiggins rounded out the Ave Maria effort with an overall score of 195.

Newberry College emerged from the tournament with the team title, logging 598 strokes on the week. The Wolves held off charges from No. 18 Truett McConnell and No. 11 Southeastern on Tuesday, winning by three and five strokes, respectively. No. 12 Milligan and USC Beaufort rounded out the top five. The individual title was claimed by Newberry's Noelia Adkins, who was the only player in the field under par, shooting one-under and winning by two strokes.

The Gyrenes will be back on the course in two weeks' time for the Invite at Innisbrook, hosted by Dalton State College. That event will tee off on Monday, September 26 at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. The final round is scheduled for the following day, and the tournament is again expected to include many of the top teams in the nation.
