Community High School of Naples issued the following announcement on Sept. 15.
US students heard local Holocaust survivor, Mr. Heinz Wartski, describe his experiences in Europe in the 1930s and ‘40s. Students from Rho Kappa, the CSN Social Studies Honor Society, welcomed Mr. Wartski and helped to lead this moving assembly. Born in Danzig in 1929, Mr. Wartski survived the Nazi regime in the 1930s. Upon his father’s release from a concentration camp in 1939, the Wartski family moved to Italy and then to America in 1949. Mr. Wartski later joined the American army and served in the Korean War. The speaker ended his presentation by giving this advice to the students: “We all have a mission: we all are here to save the world, but we cannot do it with hatred.” Read more on the Holocaust Museum’s website.
After the assembly, students gathered in their advisories to discuss the impact of the Holocaust and the experiences of Mr. Wartski. Students also learned about the Jewish High Holy Days through several experiences created by the CSN Spectrum Club. They played a Kahoot that covered Jewish customs and holidays, received a card with their initials written in Hebrew, and snacked on sticks of honey. Spectrum Club students wanted to be both respectful of Mr. Wartski’s experiences of the Holocaust, and also celebrate aspects of Jewish culture that they feel are sometimes overshadowed in history classes by the tragedies of the 1930s and ‘40s.
