Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Sunday afternoon's match between the FGCU women's soccer team and Loyola Chicago was declared a no contest after lightning forced a stoppage about 65 minutes into the game. Due to travel restrictions, the teams were forced to call the game.
After a scoreless first half, the Ramblers scored twice early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead. However, in the 64th minute, the game was stopped. The two teams tried to restart about two hours later, but after another minute of playing, more lightning was detected in the area and the game was called.
Loyola controlled most of the game as they outshot the Eagles 14-5 and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Ramblers also took six corner kicks as opposed to just two for FGCU.
Five different players took shots for FGCU. The best chance for the Eagles came in the minute of play after the first lightning delay as Ashlee Brentlinger (Middletown, Del./Padua Academy) took a shot from the edge of the box, but her shot was knocked over the bar by the keeper.
Because the game did not progress to 70 minutes, it is incomplete. The NCAA rule book states that if conditions lead to a suspended game and the game is not resumed the same day, it is considered a "no contest".
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they hit the road and head to Miami to take on FIU. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
