Community High School of Naples issued the following announcement on Feb. 10.
CSN trustee and parent of three girls here at school, Dr. Saurabh Patel, was invited to address our freshman class as part of the Headmaster's Speakers Series. Dr. Watson inaugurated this program three years ago to help the young Upper Schoolers begin to think about college and career paths.
A common thread among all the speakers so far has been how they overcame disappointment, rejection, and failure, and still managed to succeed and be happy. Dr. Patel concluded his presentation to the freshmen with the following advice:
- Rejection is virtually guaranteed...build resilience.
- It's a moment in time. It's NOT FOREVER.
- Study methods for different subjects vary. Find your method. Ask the teachers.
- Some items have to be memorized (medical school): repetition
- Others require deeper understanding (math equations).
- Learn how to learn. It doesn't end in the classroom.
- Difficult and worthy pursuits often take a long time, and they require immense focus (THINK COLLEGE ESSAY!)
- It's okay to choose classes and not be "sure" about them.
- Compare your conviction to your commitment, before you say "I'm not a good test taker."
- Innovation/building things is an iterative process. It NEVER goes perfectly.
